Pep Up Your Virtual Gala with a Talent Contest

We’re seeing more and more customers hosting virtual live galas these days. And many of them are coming up with super creative ways to boost attendance, keep their audience riveted to the virtual event screen, and/or increase event revenue.

Adding a Talent Contest to your virtual event checks all three of these critical-to-event-success boxes. A creative customer shared this brilliant idea with us. We like it so much that we’re passing it along to you.

The software allows you to display talent contest videos or photos right alongside a donation screen. Viewers vote with their dollars, making donations while they watch. The contestant/act that generates the most donations wins.

But the real winner is your organization. By adding a talent contest, you’ve raised significantly more revenue at virtually no expense. (You’ll need a professional AV technician to help you prepare and connect your video feed, but if you’re running a virtual event, you’ve probably already hired one.)

The most appealing talent contests feature brief videos of students or community members performing. But a scaled down talent contest could also include still photos (cutest pet, best decorated cake, etc).

The tried-and-true talent contest approach:  members of your community performing (music, dance, comedy, poetry-slam, you name it), has broad appeal. There’s a good reason it’s what we all think of first when we hear the phrase.

But don’t hesitate to branch out from there:

  • Best school spirit: contestants wear their school swag and sing the school song, perform the school cheer, or even just say what they love about their school.

If people can compete at it, you can probably build a contest for it and include it in your event.

Here’s another spin:  If you have a gym, library, sports field, or other venue sitting unnamed, come up with some potential names and let folks vote on them with their donations. Ask a team to represent each name and create a short video explaining why their name should win. You can establish the new venue name in perpetuity, or plan to change it each year.

Here’s how to set up your Talent Contest

And if you’ve got your own great ideas for boosting audience participation, engagement and giving — in a Virtual Event, or any type of event — post them in the comments. We’d love to learn from you.
